Last year, 458,380 individual businesses were created in France, with nearly 360,000 under the single status of the entrepreneur.

More than one in two businesses has been created under the new regime in 2010, reports the National Institute of Statistics.

Came into force on 1 January 2009, the status of the entrepreneur allows employees, unemployed, pensioners and students to develop an activity as primary or supplementary to increase their income, with simplified procedures and a very favorable tax treatment.

In the single month of December 2010, the number of new companies is down from the month of November (-6.7%). The declining number of births of self-entrepreneurs is partly offset by higher auto-off creations contractors (+13.2%), INSEE said.
